Halloween 2012 Costumes

Cameron decided that he wanted to be a Gentleman Pirate (not a scruffy one). I hit up the thrift shops, craft shops and antique shops looking for the right things. I found the coat at a thrift store in town. It was a little torn up and plain, so I mended the tears, sewed on a collar, found awesome pirate buttons at one of the fabric shops in town and sewed them onto the sleeves, collar, and sides. I put together his pirate hat using this tutorial, and then made the sash from fabric from my scrap bag. He just wore the pants and shirt from last year's costume (tucking the troll tail in a pocket so it wouldn't show). I was a little nervous that it would look hokey. The hat looks goofy up close and the coat is a little hobbled together. But I started giggling with glee when Cameron came down the hall and I saw how it had all come together. I love it!

And then there was Em and Chip.

Do you get it? I was my cousin Emilee for Halloween.
See...here's the real Em and Chip.
Emilee had no idea I was dressing up as her. I told her I was going to be a pirate along with Cameron...had to throw her off somehow. We were hanging out one day and while she went to run some errands I raided her closet for clothes, jewelry, and the hair flower so I'd be authentic. I added the belt, the leggings, and even made a little hedgehog to go on my wrist in honor of Emilee's pet hedgehog. It took an entire can of red hair coloring to get my hair that color...but it was perfect. The look on Em's face when she realized I'd dressed up as her was hilarious.

Me as Emilee and Emilee as Quorra (from Tron).

It was a lot of fun to put together the costumes. I was so excited with how they both turned out!

Halloween Decorations

 From bottom to top:
Bloody Candles: Pinspired Project (see next picture).
Dried Corn: WalMart
Troll (by the corn): Gift from Cameron's brother from his time in Norway.
Black and White Photos: Photos my Great-Grandfather (Em's Grandfather) took.
Quidditch Photo: Personal photo project
Boots: From a local thrift/antique/consignment store.
Framed Leaf: Melted Crayon Project
Yucca Ball: DIY
Metal Kaleidoscope: Gift from a friend.

To make these we lit a red taper candle and let it drip on the white candle, turning the white candle as needed.

I found these boots at a local thrift/antique/consignment shop and had to have them as they were only $10. They are way to small for my feet but I knew they'd make a fun fall/Halloween centerpiece and/or decoration.

 From left to right...
Witch's wreath: DIY from last year
Mummy head topiary and Ghost: DIY from last year
Necktie Garland: DIY from last year
Leaves: Walmart. I put them in an orange vase we found in the house when we moved in. The vase is being held up in a bowl we got for our wedding by 4 dried ears of corn.
Halloween Silhouettes hung on a ribbon with clothes pins: DIY from last year

Watercolor Portrait of Us

Painted a new picture for our entryway this afternoon (and luck would have it I already had all the supplies).

It actually was a lot easier than I expected. I happened on a great tutorial and that's where I got my inspiration. Here's her original paintings and the link to the tutorial (she really does a good job of explaining what to do...it's not as hard as you would think):
http://growcreative.blogspot.com/2012/09/easy-watercolor-portrait-tutorial.html

I did mine slightly different from her...she only converts her photos to two tone and I converted mine to 4 tone because I wanted a little more shading and definition. I like how it turned out and it's fun to have something new in the entry way.

And here's how it looks in our entryway (it looks a little better from a distance rather than right up close):

Framed Monogram

Along with the bottles, I made a framed W monogram as well. It turned out pretty cute.

I got the W at walmart and then painted it up. I found the frame at an antique/thrift store and painted it white. Then I added the burlap, pearls and lace (all from Wally World too).

I got the idea from this:

I looked all over town at each of the thrift shops and antique stores and couldn't find an oval frame...so I made do with the square one and bought a small letter, and I like how it turned out.

Decorated Bottles

I decided to try my hand at the bottle decorations that I've seen all over Pinterest for a bridal shower I was helping host. Cameron and I have kept all our glass bottles for a while now and so we  had quite the stash to choose from. I decided to start with 5 bottles, all varying in height and shape.
I cleaned them off, inside and out, gathered my supplies (navy blue, white, burlapy and pearls) and then got to work. Here were my pictures of inspiration (thank you Pinterest):

So I combined ideas, mixed and matched and this is what I came up with:

I was quite pleased with how they turned out. They were each pretty easy to put together. I was going to do a tutorial...but really you just do what you'd think. For the twine bottles you start at the top (leaving a short tail to tuck in the bottle), add a few rounds of glue and wrap the twine tightly around the bottle, adding more rounds of glue and more twine wraps as you go. The white bottles...spray paint. The blue bottle...poured paint in the bottle and rotated it around until everywhere was covered. Then you just add whatever embellishments you want.

Scrap Bandage

Sliced my thumb open doing the dishes...ran to the bathroom and we're out of bandages of any sort. Good thing I have a fabric scrap stash.

Kitchen Scale

A few weeks back I was contacted about doing a newborn shoot. In preparation I went through our local thrift and antique stores looking for ideas and props (since baby shoots are not a common shoot for me I really didn't have much). At the Antique Mall I found a fun scale and wire basket. I knew that I could use them in the shoot and then find ways to decorate with them at home so I put them in my basket and brought them home. I hung the scale up on the wall today and the basket just seemed big and bulky and it was hard to balance anything in it so it didn't fall out.

So I then went and pulled out the wire basket I bought. I looked kinda rough, but I knew when I saw it in the store that it had potential.

So I scraped the old paint off and spray painted it black, and hung it up.
Much better! I love the look of that. It doesn't take up counter space, which I love, and it just looks so fun and cute hanging there off the cupboard.

Some day I might clip off the flower and house design on the basket, but for now it is great just as it is.

Customizing your Blog: Creating Toolbars

I had a question emailed to me about how I did the layout of this blog, so I thought I'd put it all together here.

The main question was in regards to how I created my menu bar up at the top of my page. There are two main ways you can do this, and which one you choose will depend on what you want out of it. You can create a toolbar through labels, which is ideal if you want to have a toolbar that links to posts on a certain subject on your blog or if you have subjects that you will be updating and adding to as you go (i.e. Christmas posts, sewing posts, etc). You can also create a toolbar through pages, which is ideal if you have a single post or piece of information that you want to be easily accessible (like an about me, contact me, or information page).

Okay...let's first cover creating a toolbar through creating labels.

With each post that you write you can assign a label to it; you can even assign multiple labels to one single post. There are two different ways to do this.

Creating and assigning labels:

1.When you are writing your posts, there is a section in the toolbar to the right where you can type in the labels you want. It looks like this:
You can type in whatever labels you want there in that text box in the toolbar, just separate each label with a comma. Once you have labeled a post, that label is saved in the system and all you have to do is click on the label below the text box and it will apply it to the post.

2. If you already have posts written up that you want to apply labels to, you can either go in and edit the post and assign labels as we did above, or you can assign them from your posts screen. To get to the posts screen from your Blogger Dashboard (usually what you see when you log in to Blogger), click on your blog name.

The click on "Posts" in the left toolbar.

Then select the post you want to label and click the little label icon in the buttons right above the posts (in the screenshot below it's right next to the "Publish" and "Revert to Draft" buttons).

And then you can either apply a label you already created, or you can select "New label..." and create a new label right there. Be sure to deselect the post after you are done labeling it.

Creating the Labels Toolbar

Once you have labels created, you then need to add the label gadget to the top of your blog to create that toolbar you're going for. This type of toolbar is good if you want to have an easy link to all the posts you did on a certain subject, and if it is a label that you plan to add to as you go along with your blog. Here's how to do that:

Open up your blog and click on the Layout button in the left toolbar.

This will generally be what the layout page looks like (everyone's will be slightly different depending on their content and organization). If you look in the screenshot below, you'll see the large white box labeled "Blog Posts", and the column of smaller boxes to the right. At the top of that right sidebar is a link that says "Add a Gadget". Click that.

A box will appear with all sorts of nifty gadgets that you can add to your blog. You'll have to scroll down a ways until you find the Labels gadget.

When you click on the Labels gadget, the "Configure Labels" box will appear. You can leave the title as labels or change it to whatever you want it to be. I changed mine to Holidays. This window is where you get to decide which labels you want to show on your blog. You can have one list of all the labels on your blog, one list of selected labels, or multiple lists of selected labels. Let's say that I wanted to make a labels list of just the holiday labels I have. The second line in the box lets you choose between showing "All Labels" or "Selected Labels". I only want the holiday ones and not all the labels, so I'd select "Selected Labels".

You'll then have to scroll down in the box and your label list will appear. Now you already need to have your labels created at this point, you can't add labels in this box. I hit the "Select none" button so I didn't have to go through and manually deselect all 39 labels, and then I went back and selected the holiday labels I wanted. After selecting the labels you want, hit "Done" beneath the label selections first and then hit the orange Save button.

Your new labels gadget then shows up at the top of your gadget list.

Now you can leave your labels on the side bar or you can move them up to the top of your blog. If you want to move them you simply click, hold, and drag the label to the top. You may have to move it around slightly until the dotted box appears where you want the labels to be.

Once it is in place, hit "Save Arrangement" in the top toolbar and go check out your new labels toolbar!

Now every time you create a post that has that label, it will automatically be linked to those tabs.

On my blog I choose to have the labels in my right sidebar rather than up at the top since I have many labels.

Now let's cover creating a toolbar through creating pages.

Open up your dashboard and click on your blog's name.
Then click the "Pages" button on the left toolbar.

This is where you can create one single page that you probably won't be updating often. To create a new page, click "New Page" and type in your content (the window looks quite similar to when you create a new blog post). After you have your page contents all typed up and saved, return to this screen. You can then choose where you want the pages toolbar to appear on your blog. There on the left in the screenshot below you can see the button that says "Show pages as Top Tabs". Click that.

You then can choose to have the toolbar show at the top of your blog, on the side, or not to show at all so you can just link to them from posts.
I have my pages set up so they appear at the top of my blog:

So there are two methods you can use to create toolbars on your blog. It is a nice way to keep your blog organized and to make it easy for people to find the information they are looking for.

I've started on some of my Christmas presents and I'm loving how they are turning out and I so badly want to post pictures up...but that would kinda spoil the surprise. So...just know that some fun posts are coming.
